Abstract

Code-switching is a sociolinguistics phenomenon that is often found in speech communities daily activities, including during the process of teaching English. Code-switching in English teaching is not only found in class room, but also in several media on the internet, especially on Youtube. This study aims to reveal the types and reasons of Code-switching produced by a native named Mr Dennis on the Guru Mr D YouTube Channel. This study used qualitative methods and theory from Hoffman (1991) to analyze the utterances produced by Mr Dennis. The writer chose a grammar tutorial playlist which consists of 10 videos with 60 minutes total duration that explain different topics about grammar. The result of study showed that there are three types and five reasons for codeswitching found in the video. Three types include, two cases of tag switching, 76 cases of inter-sentential code-switching, and 202 cases of intra-sentential codeswitching. While five reasons of code switching found are 61 cases of intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutors, 59 cases of discussing about particular topics, 23 cases of repetition used for clarification, 14 cases of expressing solidarity, and two cases of interjection.. It can be concluded that, in teaching English, it is very possible if a teacher will use code switching in the teaching process, especially using online learning.
