Abstract
Wakatobi is one of the centers of secondhand clothing consumption in Indonesia. The consumption practice of secondhand clothing become a positive trend at a good economic growth, even though secondhand clothing is an unwanted commodity in producing countries. This phenomenon is often seen as a geographical variation that shaped by socio-political norm. The aim of the study was to understand the consumption practice of secondhand clothing as a practice of identity in the Wakatobi. The method of the study consist of observation technique, semi-structured interview, and questioner. The approach was post-colonial reading, understanding the colonial discourse that operated in the consumption practice of secondhand clothing. This study used the analytical technique of Miles & Gilbert (2005). The results of the study showed that the consumption practice of secondhand clothing originates from poor economic growth where low prices were as an option. In the next development, the consumption practice was also influenced by colonial discourse as an imperial relation that operates in the relation of the consumption practice of secondhand clothing. Secondhand clothing was an import product represent as quality product. Secondhand clothing was a thing of pride, referring to a symbol of modernity, compared to local products. Neverthless, the representation was contextualized in local style so it formed a dress norm such as formal-casual. Secondhand clothing was used for casual activities, even though it represented as a quality products. Instead, local clothing was used for formal activities. Therefore, formal-casual practice was understood as a form of cultural hybridity, namely a pattern that arised as a result of the sense between attraction and rejection of a commodity. These senses popular by the term of ambivalence in postcolonial discourse.
