Abstract
This study aims to reveal how beauty is portrayed in True Beauty Webtoon. Initially released in 2018, True Beauty Webtoon which always ranked among the big three in terms of popularity tells a story about a middle-school girl named Jugyeong Lim who used to be ugly but because of the pressure of society, she transformed herself and become beautiful with the help of makeup. To pursue the aim of this study, qualitative methods along with narrative and non-narrative approaches in comics were used. The data collected were from episodes 0 until 146, which then were analyzed using the Beauty Myth concept by Naomi Wolf. The results of narrative and non-narrative analysis showed that True Beauty Webtoon portrayed true beauty as a negotiation process of standardized beauty. Unlike the concept of beauty in society usually associated only with outer beauty, in this webtoon, beauty is associated with inner beauty although it is still affected by physical appearance supported by the use of cosmetics. Thus, it seems that the cosmetic industry in Korea has a significant role in defining beauty among youth in Korea as the cosmetic industry there is getting rapidly developed.
