Abstract

Mel Gibson’s epic film Braveheart introduced people to one of the Scotland national heroes named William Wallace. There are many different interpretations concerning with Braveheart movie compared to official account, such as William Wallace, the condition on that time, the war he leads and his passion of love (to the girl he loved as well as the country). Furthermore, the problem that is analyzed in this thesis is about the new identity of William Wallace between the official accounts and the movie itself. To analyze this thesis, I will use the descriptive method as well. This method is preferred to be applied in order to gain a descriptive explanation of the problem through the events and the actions of the story. Next, the analysis is done through juxtaposing both literary and non-literary texts. By applying the theory of New Historicism, this study finds that the representation of William Wallace is different from the official history. This study focuses on those different representations of William Wallace. The differences are seen through the perspective of new historicism, where both literary and non literary texts are taken in equal position.
