Abstract

Inez is a novel which is written by Carlos Fuentes. The novel itself portrays the love relationship of two characters, Gabriel Atlan-Ferrara and Inez Prada. Both of them have different way in understanding of their love. It is also influenced by the dissimilarity of their life background. Therefore, they can never reach the same perception to overcome their problem. Fromm’s psychoanalytic theory, especially his idea of love, will be applied in analyzing this subject. This study is focused on the dissimilarity in viewing love between Inez Prada and Gabriel Atlan-Ferrara. The dissimilarity itself can be seen from the different point of viewing life between them. Gabriel seems to always look back to his past experience; on the contrary Inez looks straight to her future. As a result, they can never concrete their dream to engage a serious relationship. It can be concluded that love without any caring, respect, responsibility, and knowledge will destroy the good side of love itself. In this case, selfishness, is supposed to be reduced in order to make a mutual love of a couple.
