Abstract

People always communicate in their daily lives. In a communication, there are two or more people involved and they always take turn in speaking. Turn taking happens when the speaker starts to say something and then the hearer follows to give the responses. Besides the utterances as the linguistic factors in turn taking, there is also an important thing that people consider it as a trivial one, namely gesture, the nonlinguistic factors. People use gesture when they want to support or emphasize their utterances and sometimes they use it to replace the words. Turn taking that uses gesture also happens in film, because there are scenes and conversation. In "Friends" TV serials, there are many gestures used by the characters. This study wants to prove that gesture can help both parties in turn taking. The source of the data in this study is "Friends" TV serials, because it is known as one of the American top serials which is also successful in Indonesia. And the problems in "Friends" TV serials are everyday life's problems which might happen in our life, too. The method used is descriptive qualitative. The result shows that gesture really helps both parties in turn taking. It also shows that the strategy which is mostly used by the characters is taking over strategy, the least is interruption.
