Abstract

Willa Cather (1873-1947) is one of America's foremost female writers who focused her work on the pioneers' spirit and traits. Her background of growing up among the pioneers in the Western United States had led her to write about the traits and characteristics of such people. My Mortal Enemy, though does not explicitly portray the life of the pioneers, tells about the characters who possess such traits and spirits within them. The thesis writer finds that Willa Cather's portrayal of her characters reflects her own life, ideas, and values. Therefore, the thesis writer applies the biographical approach and Freudian theory of psychology in this thesis to analyze the reflection of the novelist's mind, ideas, desires, and life experiences in the main characters of the novel: Myra Henshawe and Nellie Birdseye. The method of the study applied is library study. After the analysis is done, the thesis writer concludes that Myra Henshawe and Nellie Birdseye represent the two stages of Wi1la Cather's life: her adolescence and maturity. They also reflect two different sides of her character: Myra is the pleasure-hunter who follows her id until she learns better, submits herself to the dominion of her superego, and finally understands perfect peace through death. Nellie is the woman-of-reason who is dominated by her ego and through her learning of the right and wrong comes to the understanding of the morally good as demanded by her superego.
