Abstract

There were several main crucial points that could be concluded from this final report about Criteria and Strategies in Translating Meeting Notes of Western Australia — East Java Province Government Delegation Meeting which answered the two statement of problems which were ways to translate the meeting notes. The writer learns a lot about translating a text using the right strategy and criteria which stated by Baker (1992). Translation is not only translating a text without based of grammar or even cultural substitution. However, it is more complex than that. The writer later found out that translation consists of eight strategies and six criteria. The eight criteria are translation by a more general word, translation by a less expressive word, translation by using cultural substitution, translation by using a loan word, translation by a paraphrase or related word, translation by a paraphrase of unrelated word, translation by omission and translation by illustration. As for criteria, there are six criteria which are equivalence at word level, equivalence above word level, grammatical equivalence, textual equivalence: thematic and information structure, textual equivalence: cohesion and pragmatic equivalence. In writer’s point of view, those eight strategies and six criteria are vital in the progress of doing translation, without those strategies and criteria a translation will not be guaranteed of its accuracy.
