Abstract

This study aim to show how Banjar society present in the novel Jendela Seribu Sungai by Miranda Seftiana & Avesina Soebli described and to study issue about modernity that is showed through how Banjar society described in the novel. Sociology of literature paradigm is used in this study for reading the novel and focused on the literature itself. Through reading Jendela Seribu Sungai novel, the portrayal of Banjar society through local colour present in the novel is disucussed. After that, modernization issue in the novel also discussed based on how it is presented from the portrayal of Banjar society in the novel found before. From this study few portrayal of Banjar society is found through local colours present in the novel. Those portayal are portrayal of Banjar society closeness to the river, Islam and local belief of Banjar society, Banjar society closeness with nature, and Banajr society way of life. Through those protrayal, Jendela Seribu Sungai novel raise a problem connected with modernization issue which is present in Banjar society and also show it’s role in responding said problem. As for modernity issue present in the novel are problem between modernization and traditional value, also problem between modernization and environment change. Then from those problem presented in the novel, Jendela Seribu Sungai role in responding modernization is seen, which are as a critic for modernization, a way to respond modernization, and means to preserve Banjar culture.
