Abstract
Fanfiction is a type of online fiction that is quite popular and has many readers in Indonesia. Among yaoi fanfiction fans in Indonesia, one rating that is quite popular is R (Restricted) rated or adult story rating. Furthermore, among R-rated yaoi fanfiction fans in Indonesia, it is found that not only readers but also R-rated yaoi fanfiction writers are heterosexual Muslim women. This thesis examines how and why heterosexual Muslim women in Indonesia have interests and imaginations about homoerotism and adult stories with explicit sex scenes. The purpose of this study is analyzed through Personal Myth theory proposed by Dan P. McAdams. McAdams defines a personal myth as a story that is naturally constructed to bring different aspects of a person and scattered experiences into an overall purpose. This understanding of the personal myth will be sharpened with queer theory by Judith Butler by analysing gender identity of heterosexual Muslim women and gender identity construction in their writings. Queer theory is explicitly associated with destabilizing all gender/sexual identities. This thesis used text research method and in-depth interviews to the informants. The findings of this thesis indicate that the informants and characters in their writings have queer identity. Furthermore, the investigations show different selves among the informants. In this thesis, researcher found the reasons why these heterosexual Muslim women could like and even produce yaoi narratives i.e admire how the gay characters in the fanfiction expressed themselves that lead to an enjoyment of the homosexual relationships and also as an escape from the pain in the real life.
