Abstract

Introduction: Parenting stress is a condition that arises as a result of the high demands in parenting process. High parenting stress can give negative impact to both parents and children, such as child abuse and parental depression. The main aspects of parenting stress came from internal factors of both parents and children, however, several studies also show the influence of demographic factors on parenting stress. Objective: This study aims to find out demographic factors that associate to parenting stress in parents of 6-12 years old children. Methods: This research is an analytical observational study with cross-sectional approach based on primary data taken from the subject by using Indonesian version of PSI. This study was conducted in SD Al Falah Surabaya from July 2019 untill August 2020, involving 35 parents of 6-12 years old children. The data obtained were then analyzed using the Spearman’s Rho and Fisher Exact test. Results: From all of the subjects in this study, the majority of 74,3% had parenting stress within normal limits. One out of thirteen subscales within the Parent Domain and Child Domain showed higher results than the other, namely the Depression subscale of 42,9%. The subjects of this study had a mean age of 37.46 ± 5.52 (mean ± SD), with the majority of the proportion being women, having undergone higher education in university level, worked, had incomes above the regional minimum wage, and had 2 children. Bivariate analysis outcomes demonstrated no significant association between demographic factors and parenting stress in this study. Conclusion: Parenting stress of the population in this study is still within normal limits and there are no demographic factors that correlate with parenting stress.
