Abstract

Introduction: The quality of life and dietary compliance of Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 patients is generally still very low so family support needs an emotional dimension. The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship of emotional dimension family support with diet adherence and quality of life in Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 patients. Method: This study used a descriptive correlation design by asking for cross sectional study. The selection of research sites uses cluster sampling taken in each region of Surabaya. The population in this study were all Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus patients in 5 District Health Centers who won 1165. The number of samples in the study was 10-20% of the participants collected by 129 respondents using purposive sampling methods spread across five working areas of the health center in Surabaya. The independent variable in this study is family support emotional dimension and the dependent variable in this study is diet planning and quality of life. Data collection using the Hensarling Diabetes Support Scale questionnaire, dietary meetings, and Quality of Life Diabetes was then analyzed with Spearman Rho monitoring statistical tests (α≤0.05). Results: Spearman rho test showed a significant relationship between emotional dimension family support with diet adherence (p = 0,000; r = 0,898) and quality of life (p = 0,000; r = 0,915). Conclusion: Emotional dimension family support is related to diet adherence and quality of life in Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 patients. The better the emotional dimension family support, the better the level of diet adherence and quality of life for Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 patients. Diabetes mellitus Type 2 from the family can remind patients of Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 not to break the rules of eating even though Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 patients want it. The emotional dimension of family support that the patient gets well such as motivation support and full attention can make Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 patients more excited and more motivated to recover from their illness. Discussion: Further research needs to be done regarding other dimensions of family support such as information, appreciation, and instrumental family support.
