Abstract
The aim of this research is analyzing the representation of masculinity in Indonesian popular novels in the 2000s and its socio-cultural context. The object of this research are novels which is written by Indonesian male and female author titled Lelaki Harimau, Cinta Tak Pernah Tepat Waktu, Manjali dan Cakrabirawa, and Koplak. These four Indonesian popular novels in the 2000s show how the structure of masculinity is opposing each other, especially between traditional masculinity in Indonesia and its representation in the novels. This qualitative research uses representation theory by Stuart Hall and masculinity concepts. The results of this research are (1) the construction of masculinity in Indonesian popular novels in the 2000s negotiates the traditional norms of masculinity in Indonesia, (2) the masculine depicted in the Indonesian popular novels in the 2000s is categorized as hybrid masculinity, (3) Indonesian male and female author tend to emphasize on different point in showing the construction of masculinity’s changes which are depicted in Indonesian popular novels in the 2000s, (4) the masculinity norms in the Indonesian popular novels in the 2000s is trying to restore gender norms based on the value of harmony in Indonesia, and (5) the masculinity in Indonesian popular novels in the 2000s is not neutral and represent the socio-political condition of Indonesia in the post-reformation
