Abstract

This research aims to identify forms of symbolic violence through story elements and reveal their meaning in selected short stories by Kompas in 2016 entitled “Tanah Air” Martin Aleida, “The Barber” Budi Dharma, “History” Putu Wijaya, “Why Do They Pray to God?” Faisal Oddang, and “Wayang Potehi: A Lost Love” Han Gagas. The theory used in this research is Robert Stanton's structuralism and Pierre Felix Bourdieu's concept of symbolic violence. The research method is descriptive qualitative. The results shows that the symbolic violence in five short stories could be identified through the facts of the story: the setting and plot of events, point of view, characters, and relationships between characters. The fact of the story shows that symbolic violence is presented differently by each short story. The forms of symbolic violence identified from the five short stories are 1) exile of exiles in 1965 in the form of deprivation of rights and identity as citizens, 2) stigmatization of military power and terror against small communities, 3) practice of power through altered historical knowledge. , renovated, and revised based on the interests of the authorities, so as to change the collective memory of the community, 4) post-independence shackles that still exclude local residents, and 5) ethnic Chinese racial discrimination and the existence of people who are in opposition to the authorities. Meanwhile, the meaning generated is broadly about "humanity" as the main value in building harmony of life to avoid all forms of domination, discrimination, and violence, both for oneself, the people around, the environment, social community, and in the context of state life.
