Abstract

The main problems that will be discussed in this study is the life portrayal of Tara and Bim as subaltern woman as depicted in. Clear Light of Day. The objective of this study is discussing how subaltern women in the novel survive from double oppressions. In the meantime, this study also tries to excavate the unsaid history of subaltern women. This study is a result of qualitative analysis. The main data are taken from Anita Desai’s work entitled Clear Light of Day. The data are then understood and analyzed through the study of Feminist Postcolonial study. The result of the study shows that in Clear Light of Day, subaltern women experience double oppressions. They are not given chance to determine their life preference by them. They either follow traditional norms or modern norms. The norms are based on religious verdict and it happened that its interpretation was used to keep subaltern woman subordinate to men. It was affirmed by state constitution. Since male power dominates government, the constitution retains patriarchy. The Subaltern women can not speak. They could not free from the oppressions so that their choice is no other than to survive.
