Abstract

The objective of the study is to find out what Indonesian language sounds are pronounced incorrectly by the native Chinese speakers in Surabaya and why these sounds are pronounced incorrectly by native Chinese speakers in Surabaya. In order to find out the influence of Standard Chinese (L 1) in the production of the Indonesian language (L2) sounds, the writer recorded the participants' pronunciation in the pronunciation test. The data was analyzed using some theories, namely Alwi (1998/2003), Duanmu (2007), Ellis (2000/2010) and O' Grady and Debrovolsky (1989). Besides, the writer also used phonological processes' theory such as assimilation and deletion. Moreover, IPA system of phonetic transcription is utilized to identify and determine the pronunciations of the participants. The result obtained in this study shows that there are several Indonesian language consonants and vowels were pronounced incorrectly by the participants. The influence of Standard Chinese consonant sounds into the Indonesian are [t], [n], [s], [r], [I], [p], [ph], [ii'], [t], [k], [g], [7], and [ts]. In addition, six Indonesian language vowels: [e], [a], [o], [o], [u] and [u:] were pronounced incorrectly by the participants as well.
