Abstract

Akutagawa Ryunosuke (芥川龍之介), was born in Tokyo, on March 1, 1892 and died on July 24, 1927 at his 35 age. His Interest on spiritual stories also had an impact on his work. The themes of the story with the spiritual element in the Akutagawa’s work, can be seen in several of his works, some of which called Jigoku Hen and Kumo no Ito. In translation of Kappa, Andy Bayu Nugroho mentioned that picture book with a spiritual theme favored by Akutagawa was Kusa Zoushi. Researchers suspect that there is a correlation in the some part of Jigoku Hen hell image and Jigoku Zoushi’s Hell concept. This research purpose is to analyze Hell form of Jigoku Hen and search what the true meaning that Akutagawa want to tell through image of Hell in his work. In Jigoku Hen, there are 5 elements that appear and be represented by certain conditions when forming an image of hell. That elements is Oni – Orc (鬼), Honoo – Fire (炎), Tsumibito – Sinners (罪人), Jigoku no Kemono – Beast of Hell (地獄の獣), and Tsumi – Sins (罪). Akutagawa works with the theme of Hell has elements of salvation in it, which are shown in the embodiment of compassion of the Buddha. And in Jigoku Hen, it shown in Yoshihide choice when he want to end his life. To end the life which is perceived as suffering when human life is bound to a form of object or a feeling. Yoshihide chose to end his arrogant ways of life and hope in the future life Good Kamma that happens in the last moments of his life be able to bring Yoshihide birth in next reincarnation of life.
