Abstract

This paper has surveyed theories of strategy imitation to address two issues, why firms should be differentiated or imitated each other and when an organization should imitate others and when should they differ. Based on resource-based view, this report examines why differentiation is matter to increase performance. The institutional theory addresses why an organization need to gain legitimacy by being similar with others. The hybrid approach also discussed that moderate level of imitation/differentiation can generate substantial performance, which is discussed based on dynamic capabilities perspective. The second issue is discussed based on some contingency variables, such as environmental uncertainty and types of knowledge (complexity of strategy), and show when the organization should imitate and when they should not imitate to generate better performance. Future research directions are also further discussed in the paper.
