Abstract

The Sense of an Ending is a novel by Julian Barnes and published in 2011. The novel portrays Tony Webster's life from youth until old age with wrong perceptions in his life. The prominent issue in this novel is the regret of love in the past which is experienced by Tony Webster which can be analyzed using New Criticism theory. The use of New Criticism will be focused on formal elements in the novel. The formal elements which will be used to examine the theme in the story is the characterization of Tony Webster depicting regret of love in the past which is experienced by Tony Webster include character, setting, conflicts, and symbols in the novel. Moreover, the formal elements are organic unity to represent the regret of love in the past which is experienced by Tony Webster. The analysis aims to know that regret of love is hurt and painful for Tony but he is able to create the meaning of life that life is not alone even though he has experienced regret for love and cannot be together but still make a good relationship or friendship. Regret itself is painful and always comes at the end of life without unknown before by someone. Therefore, at the end of the analysis, this study finds that the character of Tony Webster does not feel happy in old age because he regrets his suffering, and sorrow until his old age.
