Abstract

Kanji is a type of characters used by Japanese with a higher level of complexity compared to other Japanese characters. Although considered as complicated, Kanji has a basic component that can be used to discover its meaning which is commonly called bushu. However, there are some kanji characters whose lexical meanings deviate from their basic components. This study discusses about bushuritto which basically means sword. The analysis involves discussions about kanji with bushuritto whose meaning is not related to the sword, and how they produce meanings when combined with other kanji. The data is gained from SanseidoJoyou Kanji Jiten 2013 as the main data source. The data consisted of 13 kanji and 32 jukugo are analyzed using the origin theory of kanji formation (rikusho) and theory of meaning. The method employed is descriptive qualitative research with content analysis technique. Based on the results of the discussions, there are 12 kanji analyzed which are conceptually and meaningfully not related to the sword while the remaining one kanji character still has a side meaning related to the sword. Connotatively, there are three kanji that still have a link with the meaning of the sword. The rest of 32 jukugo do not contain meaning related to the sword from the class of verbs, nouns, adjectives, or adverbs.
