Abstract

Literature is one of the media used for writers to express their distressed desires. The pressure felt byauthor often hides behind a word, whether done consciously or unconsciously. As in the short story "Lemon" by KajiiMotojiro, which tells the story of main character life in dealing with various problems. Poor health due to tuberculosis, and debt. however, the main character never blame his health, and economic problems. The main character has another problem, which is related to feelings, and calls it "mysterious substance". Strangely, the "mysterious substance" felt by main character, can be scared out by using one lemon. Therefore, this essay will use Sigmund Freud's psychoanalysis theory. Psychoanalysis is a theory that sees people are controlled by the unconscious mind, rather than the conscious mind. Unconscious mind contains desires that wish to be fulfilled. And if this desire cannot be fulfilled, then there will be pressures on him. In order to overcome this, people are gifted with self defense mechanisms. Lemon that can scared out "mysterious substances" in main character, is one form of self-defense mechanism, regression. Regression is a process in which a person acts or behaves not according to his age. This regression was done because main character had a bad experience with a woman, and the only person who was sincere about him was only her mother.
