Abstract
Historically, Disney has become one of the largest animation companies which has an impact on children and young people’s live. Disney animation series which are quite popular among children and the younger generation are princess series. There are thirteen film about princess series produced by Disney from 1937 to 2019. The focus of this research is to identify the depictions of women from those thirteen films. Appraisal theory and discourse analysis are used as analysis tools in this study. In addition, in collecting the data was used a corpus with concordance tool antcon because the data used is quite large. The results obtained from this study are all aspects of the appraisal theory found within the data. Then for further analysis within the data is found that the depiction of women is divided into three categories. The first category is the early era that describes women traditionally. Then the second category is the middle era with the depiction of women as rebellious and ambitious figures to reach their freedom, but Disney still depicts women traditionally. However, for the third category, namely present era, the depiction of women is better and modern, women are portrayed as strong figure, independent, and has the freedom to choose their life choices.
