Abstract

Health insurance is a critical component of health funding to ensure access to community health services. The unachieved target of insurance membership in several countries, especially in Indonesia, is the basis for this systematic review which aims to analyze the willingness to pay on customer preferences for health insurance membership. Systematically, database searches and selected studies were carried out in accordance with the protocol established by the PROSPERO template of the Centre for Review and Dissemination of the University of York. This systematic review was carried out in accordance with the the PRISMA Guideline. Sources of information were from four electronic databases (Science Direct, Pubmed, Scopus, and Proquest). The search strategy used the PECOS Framework technique with keywords and synonyms, to identify articles published between 2011 and 2020. Identification of literature, duplication of filtering and selection of research studies have been conducted using the Mendeley References Manager. Fifthteen articles met the eligibility criteria—which were followed by data extraction, data synthesis and deductive analysis following the research objectives. The results have shown that the willingness to pay affects client’s preferences to become member of health insurance. Factors that positively impact willingness to pay (WTP) include, but are not limited to, the level of education, income and history of illness. In the meantime, age, sex and the number of family members have a negative impact on WTP. On the basis of this, health insurance managers need to pay attention to the factors that affect the willingness to pay (WTP) for customer’ preferences to become member of health insurance to increase their coverage of membership of health insurance.
