Abstract

This study aims to discuss about neurotic anxiety which is experienced by the main character of The Tiger Rising novel, Rob. This study also aims to explain about the ways Rob cope his neurotic anxiety problem and how he solves it. This study is going to be analyzed through Psychoanalysis since this theory is capable of discussing about human mind. The method that is used in this study is qualitative research. This study finds that the death of Rob’s mother and the slaps of Rob’s father in the funeral of his mother lead to repressed feeling. Rob has tendency to repress his unresolved problem instead of speaks up to his father. This repressed feeling leads to neurotic anxiety. Rob uses defense mechanism namely identification and displacement in order to cope the neurotic anxiety. Unfortunately, both of defense mechanisms only cope the neurotic anxiety for a while. The defense mechanism does not solve the neurotic anxiety problem. In order to solve the problem, Rob speaks up to his father about his feeling which he keeps into the “suitcase” since then. He pulls out everything inside the “suitcase”.
