Abstract
Sister carrie is a novel by Theodore Dreiser which deals with a girl whose aspirations seem to be determined by her social environment. It covers the big cities with their societies. Both the cities and the societies possess intluential roles in causing the longing of the girl to emerge. As Carrie is a new comer of the big cities, namely Chicago and New York, as well as a young pleasant loving girl, the hugeness of the cities is able to strike and favorably impress the girl. Carrie is immediately fascinated by such view that can encourage her to form her own aspirations related to luxury displayed by the cities. In this case, the cities with their impressive buildings are meant to show glory that can easily distract any individuals' attentions and arouse their desires. In other words, the cities with their facilities become more than things; they become human needs or desires; they define hopes and aspirations; they measure existence and they are at the heart of the drama of life.
