Abstract

The re alization of speech sounds ·can be one chara cterist ic of a dialect. The characteristic of speech sounds of a dialect is discussed under phonology in which there are other particular problems. The terms discussed in phonology cover either segmental or suprasegmenta l properties. Vowel harmony in a dialect which can be one characteristic of the dialect is discussed under suprasegment a l phonology. This research reveals vowel harmony phenomenon found in Javanese of Surabaya dialect. The research is guided by the questions how vowel harmony is in words of Javanese in Surabaya dialect and how the classification of the occurred vowel harmony is. Descriptive qualitative methodis used in the analysing approach to the phenomenon. The analysis is done on the basis of data from thein formants. The kinds of in formati on from the in formants are the source of data. Besides. the list of words is also important to limit the observed word and to give a guidance in interviewing the i nformants search shows the occurre nce and the pattern of studied phenomenon .
